ABOUT OPERATION I.D. > How to establish a clear store policy

"As long as you're IDing, you can stay in control... Everyone here has been IDing regularly, and the number of underage customers trying to buy tobacco has gone down quite a bit."
Store employee

As a store owner or employee, it can be hard to know how to deal with customers you believe are underage. When should you ask for I.D.? How should you handle customers who can't produce a legal I.D.? What if an underage friend tries to buy cigarettes when you're at the cash?

A CLEAR STORE POLICY HELPS EVERYONE WHO WORKS IN THE STORE TO DEAL WITH UNDERAGE CUSTOMERS.

Here is an example of a clear store policy that can help you and the store owner prevent minors from trying to buy tobacco products at your store - and deal constructively with those who do.

SAMPLE STORE POLICY

  1. Our employees are trained not to sell tobacco to minors, and have signed a written commitment to uphold the law, or face possible job loss.

  2. We display signs to let customers know in advance that we won't sell tobacco to minors.

  3. To ensure compliance with the law, we ask for photo I.D. from anyone who appears to be underage.

  4. We do not sell tobacco to anyone without a valid photo I.D.

  5. We are always polite and respectful, but firm, with our underage customers.
